  • Gardenia – Kazuhiko Kato

This is such a unique song, from the instruments used to the quality of the sound. The music is unlike anything I’ve heard up until now and I love it.

Some of the features I find interesting is the prominent bass-line, which is constantly moving, and the slightly muffled voice, with what I think is a cut just before the end of every syllable (this can be heard in the chorus). The composer even adds in some chiptune throughout the second half of the piece.

Hope you enjoy this music as much as me 🙂

  • Bossa Alegre by Yoshitaka Minami With Rio Novo

The album Bossa Alegre is a selection of arrangements based on existing music but written to be in the style of the bossa nova genre. The original music that the songs are based off of is of varying genres; The album can be listened to on Spotify. Here is a list of some of my favourites.

    Album SongOriginal SongOriginal Artist
    君をのせて (Carrying you)*君をのせて沢田研二 (Kenji Sawada)
A列車で行こう (Let’s go by the A train)Take The “A” TrainDuke Ellington
    シーサイド・バウンド (Seaside Bound)シーサイド・バウンドザ・タイガース (The Tigers)
ソバカスのある少女 (Girl with freckles)ソバカスのある少女ティン・パン・アレー (Tin Pan Alley)

*This song should not be confused with Joe Hisaishi’s Kimi wo nosete from Castle in the Sky.

The original album has 10 songs in total, but these are certainly my favourites. The original songs are brilliant in their own right, but the transformation of these songs into a different genre, while keeping the essence of the original song, is wonderful.
